I go into it slightly more starting in the Charles bit (CHARLES XAVIER YOU WEE DRUNKEN CREEPER, I SHOULD NOT LOVE YOU AS I DO BUT THIS MOVIE BROKE ME, OH WELL), but it's a straight-up AU from riiiiiiiiiight around when Erik brought Shaw's body out of the sub like the world's worst Show and Tell project. Also, for real, even before this I tried to pretend X3 did not exist, because that movie, JFC, is awful and entirely why I hate Brett Rattner, who'd built up a modicum of good will with me thanks to Prison Break. He promptly spent it all, like, two minutes in on "Phoenix as a split personality in Jean's mind", like, THAT IS NOT EVEN A THING WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK.

(Weirdly, I can see Liev Schrieber devolving into Tyler Mane at some point between Wolverine and X1, and if they de-aged Emma somehow, Wolverine still sort of plays? But not X3 ever again, Jesus God no.)

I have literally never understood--and the movie did this, too--why we can't have nice things. Erik and Charles are both just wrong enough that they are not entirely right! And those are not dudes you can talk into shit, especially (mostly) Erik, so you sort of have to...nudge them. Like how horses wear blinders so they don't get distracted. (...I am aware this is an imperfect metaphor.)

Armando had a job and a life before this; it's different than Hank, who was sort of sheltered by the CIA. And they never really go into it in the books, but there's a lot of kids who've gone on to Xavier's, and they just--always stay? Which is strange, because if you have someone with a relatively easy-going mutation that isn't readily visible or particularly useful in a fight, they would...IDK, want to go to college and try to be--not normal? But have a normal life? Being a mutant means you're always a mutant, but you can maybe just do laundry without it being a giant thing, jeez.

That said, Erik's not wrong; they do need soldiers, because clearly the military has their eye on them, just--moderation! It's a useful word, guys! LEARN IT.
